Stage is set for US economic overhaul

Barack Obama on Thursday devoted the first speech he has delivered since the US election last November to highlight the urgency of tackling the country’s deepening economic crisis.

The president-elect set out a three-pronged approach to the crisis, which included strong hints of new help for struggling mortgage holders facing foreclosure and sweeping financial re-regulation – even as he emphasised the urgency of Capitol Hill enacting a large fiscal stimulus in the near future.
