Alistair Darling’s bleak Budget last week has cheered the Conservatives no end. Not only has his debt-laden forecast cast a pall over Labour’s re-election chances, it has given the Tories a renewed sense of purpose.
Arriving in Cheltenham for the party’s spring forum, party activists naturally said that election victory was in sight next year. But they also claimed to have a renewed sense of why they want to win.
