Maoists declare three-month truce in Nepal

Maoist rebels in Nepal declared a unilateral three-month truce on Thursday ahead of the country’s first parliamentary meeting since King Gyanendra handed over power to a seven-party alliance on Monday.

The Maoist party chairman Prachanda said the ceasefire was an attempt to “encourage” the seven parties to declare an “unconditional” constituent assembly election to re-write the constitution for a “democratic republic”.
