Sony Ericsson has confirmed the worst fears of the mobile phone industry by issuing a profit warning for the first quarter of this year.

The world’s top handset makers are braced for mobile sales to fall in 2009 because of the economic downturn, in what would be only the second annual decline in the industry’s 15-year history.
