Three political parties, which together represent a majority of South Korea’s parliament, plan to submit legislation on Wednesday to appoint an independent counsel to investigate bribery allegations against Samsung Group, the country’s biggest conglomerate.

The move by the United New Democratic, Democratic Labor and Create Korea parties comes after confirmation on Tuesday that prosecutors had opened an investigation into the allegations. “We assigned the case to a special investigation unit at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office,” said Kim Kyung-soo, a spokesman for the Supreme Public Prosecutors’ Office.
