Toyota reported its first profit in four quarters on Thursday and said its full-year loss would be less than half what it had previously forecast, owing to cost cuts and government incentives that have reversed a free-fall in demand.

Earlier in the week Toyota’s Formula One team principal, Tadashi Yamashina, wept during the announcement of its withdrawal from the sport to save money.
