Unlike volcanic Hawaii or coral islands such as the Seychelles’ own Aldabra atoll, these are the world’s only mid-ocean granitic islands: a “micro-continent” formed when Gondwanaland split up into east Africa, India, Madagascar and Antarctica more than 100m years ago.
