Government: The longest political shadow

When the last vote was counted in January’s presidential election, Portugal seemed to breathe a collective sigh of relief. 

Delighted or dismayed by the victory of Aníbal Cavaco Silva, the only right-of-centre candidate, voters and politicians drew comfort from the fact that no more elections are scheduled until 2009.
