Bush nominates new homeland security chief

President George W. Bush on Tuesday named Michael Chertoff, a long-time government lawyer who played a key role in the US response to the September 11 terror attacks, to lead the Department of Homeland Security.

Mr Bush called Mr Chertoff now a federal appeals court judge “a practical organiser, a skilled manager, and a brilliant thinker”.
