Barroso appeals for calm as EU agonises over treaty

José Manuel Barroso, the European Commission president, on Thursday appealed for Europe’s political leaders to proceed cautiously following the potentially fatal blow dealt to the proposed EU constitution by the Dutch referendum on Wednesday.

“What I am asking for now is that political leaders, in particular government chiefs, not take individual, or unilateral decisions. I ask political leaders to show responsibility, to show caution,” Mr Barroso said.
