Hammerson halts development

Hammerson has frozen big development activity and kicked off a cost-cutting programme as the economic downturn begins to have an impact on its retail and office property businesses.

The company warned there would be lower demand from office occupiers and retailers. A staff reorganisation and cost reduction programme should result in annual savings of £3m, it said, following a one-off cost of £1m.
