Treasury lines up protection for depositors

New legislation covering financial stability, failing banks and depositor protection should be on the statute books by February, the Treasury said on Tuesday, as it set out its latest plans for avoiding a repeat of the Northern Rock crisis.

Depositors in a failing bank would have their first £50,000 ($100,000) covered by a new guarantee scheme, compared with £35,000 under the current system.
