Japan extends Iraq deployment for up to a year

TOKYO, Dec 9 (Reuters)

Japan approved an extension of its troop deployment in Iraq on Thursday for up to a year, a decision opposed by most voters, who want to end the nation’s riskiest military mission since World War Two.

The extension was approved at a meeting of government and ruling party officials, Liberal Democratic Party executive Toranosuke Katayama told reporters. The cabinet was to meet later in the day to sign off on the decision.
