Jarvis, the rail maintenance group, swung from profit to loss in the year to the end of March because of cuts in business with Network Rail, which provides the bulk of its revenue.

Network Rail, the government-backed operator, is committed to spending £35bn ($57bn) on railway improvements in the next five years.
