SMFG to acquire Nikko Cordial for Y500bn

Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group is to acquire Nikko Cordial from Citigroup for about Y500bn ($5.2bn) in a move that will allow it to leap ahead of its competitors in the banking sector to become one of Japan’s leading securities brokers.

SMFG, Japan’s third largest banking group, is expected to announce the deal on Friday.
