House pricing: To go up or go down, that is the question

House prices must be one of Britain’s most enduring topics of dinner-table conversation. Across the land, innumerable amateur pundits provoke controversy, irritation or ire with their certitudes that a recovery, or a slump, is around the corner.

The topic has gained fresh currency in the past couple of months as a slew of surveys have suggested that prices have peaked, and are beginning to fall.
