US housing market suffers setback

New US residential construction plunged last month, falling for the first time since April and taking the wind out of the housing market's fragile recovery, official figures showed yesterday.

The 10.6 per cent drop in housing starts, to an adjusted annual rate of 529,000, was fuelled by a sharp fall in construction of multi-family homes and a more moderate decline in single-family houses.
