For 10 days Barack Obama has twisted and turned over how to respond to events in Iran, as pictures have shifted from voters flocking to the polls, to mass demonstrations, to the internet video of a young woman being fatally shot.

On Tuesday this cautious politician finally uttered the words he had resisted for almost all that time, expressing his condemnation of the post-election crackdown, as conservatives had been urging him to do for days.
