Nationwide in talks with smaller rivals

Nationwide, the UK’s largest building society, is in advanced talks to merge with two smaller rivals, the Cheshire and the Derbyshire, in the most high-profile sign to date of consolidation in the sector.

The move comes as the fall-out from the credit crunch has cast a cloud over the loan portfolios of some regional lenders and raised questions about the ones that depend on the wholesale markets for funding.
