US Republican party picks first black chairman

Michael Steele pledged on Friday to revive the Republican party outside its southern heartland after being elected the first black chairman of the Republican National Committee.

The former lieutenant governor of Maryland was the most moderate of several candidates in a contest that became a proxy for the broader battle over the future of the party.
