Redrow was the subject of some excited gossip after Steve Morgan, the housebuilder's founder and former chairman, revealed a 16.7 per cent stake.

Traders said the holding was not all it seemed, however. They believed Mr Morgan had previously held contracts for difference with Kaupthing, the collapsed Icelandic bank, which he had to convert to underlying shares. The stock finished unchanged at 156¼p.
