New leader boosts Japan opposition

The Democratic Party of Japan’s election of a new leader has won the country’s biggest opposition group clear gains as it prepares to challenge a ruling party that appears to be regaining momentum.

Opinion polls carried out since the DPJ’s election of Yukio Hatoyama, 62, as its president on Saturday suggest voters approve of the party’s replacement of Ichiro Ozawa, who resigned last week amid a fundraising scandal.
