Students scramble for fewer clearing slots

Most university places available through clearing were filled by the time phone lines closed on Friday, research by the Financial Times suggests – leaving tens of thousands of candidates fighting for the few slots remaining.

The short period of clearing that follows A-level results has been shorter than usual this year, because many more candidates have been chasing many fewer places.
