David Cameron set out to rebuild the Conservatives' fortunes north of the border yesterday by vowing to fight "little Englanders" who supported the idea of Scotland leaving the union.
He promised to defend the union against "siren voices" in his party who flirted with independence for Scotland as the route back to power at Westminster. He also vowed to protect the Barnett formula, which channels a generous share of public expenditure to Scotland.
