Unions vent anger over public sector pay squeeze

Public sector unions already in dispute with government over civil service job cuts and local government pension changes reacted angrily to the chancellor’s latest attempts to rein back public sector pay rises.

Mr Brown on Monday announced a total annual rise in the education pay bill of just 2.8 per cent from next September, reflecting the government’s determination “to keep public pay costs under control and contribute to low inflation.”
