Nuclear-armed submarines from Britain and France collided while patrolling under the surface of the Atlantic Ocean earlier this month, the UK Ministry of Defence confirmed yesterday.

The accident damaged both HMS Vanguard and Le Triomphant , but there were no reported problems with the nuclear reactors or warheads on board.
