Usain Bolt of Jamaica continued to write his name into the record books and grab the limelight, but this time he had to share gold medal glory with his country’s 4x100m relay team as they shattered the world record time. They won by about 20 lengths over second-place Trinidad and Tobago. The team won in a time of 37.10sec, improving on the 37.40 record set by the US in 1992 and repeated in 1993. Trinidad and Tobago finished in 38.06sec while Japan took the bronze medal in 38.15sec. The win added to Bolt’s earlier individual sprint golds in world-record times over 100m and 200m.

The Jamaican women’s team, however, messed up the second exchange in their relay. Featuring two-time Olympic 200 champion Veronica Campbell-Brown and led off by 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser, Jamaica was aiming for a fifth straight sprint gold medal at the games. Russia won in 42.31sec, with world championship bronze medalist Belgium getting silver and Nigeria picking up bronze.
