Inconspicuous consumption in the bag

Earlier this year, Deirdre Delahunt began receiving strange requests at Havana, her chic fashion boutique in Belfast. Customers, clutching exclusive pieces from her collection, would ask her to put the items in supermarket carrier bags.

Ms Delahunt witnessed what many luxury companies have latched on to: although customers are returning to top shops, they are doing so cautiously and with some embarrassment.
