Primary wins battle for Symbion

Primary Health Care has won a contested takeover battle for Australian-listed rival Symbion, securing a board recommendation after its A$2.7bn ($2.4bn) cash offer attracted more than 50 per cent shareholder support.

The victory is a coup for Edmund Bateman, Primary’s managing director, who successfully fought off successive attempts by Healthscope, another Australian-listed rival, to buy Symbion.
