Subprime market in UK 'has parallels with US'

Banks may be "taking on substantial risks" by ramping up mortgage lending to customers with patchy credit histories, the City regulator warned yesterday.

The Financial Services Authority, probing the UK subprime mortgage market, said arrears in this part of the market were now running at 20 times those on prime mortgages.
