Aer Lingus, the Irish carrier, and United Airlines, the US airline, are launching a service between Madrid and Washington in one of the first deals to take advantage of the European Union-US “open skies” liberalisation agreement, writes John Murray Brown.

The daily service, with Aer Lingus providing the Airbus A330 aircraft and crews, and United handling the sales and marketing, will start in March next year.
