Sport is a serious business in the north-east. Where else would a football team’s mascot be elected mayor?

Stuart Drummond, a call-centre worker better known at the time as H’Angus the Monkey of Hartlepool United, surprised everyone by winning the town’s poll in 2002 and has been re-elected since with a bigger majority.
