Will Gordon Brown call a general election within the year? Just two days before he enters Number 10, the question is suddenly on the minds of Labour MPs.

Mr Brown's close allies insist he is keeping his options open, and that spring 2009 remains the most likely date. But after his leadership acceptance speech, there is a real sense of urgency and electricity in the Labour ranks.
