I have still to get used to the idea that it is no longer Gordon Brown at the House of Commons despatch box; that the clunking fist has given way to the blinking eyebrows. For all the bad news in the Budget, Mr Brown would have beaten us into submission. The best Mr Darling could make of his debut was to bore us into a gentle stupor.
