Many European banks will have to focus on domestic retail operations as they restructure their businesses in the wake of the financial crisis, Europe’s competition chief said on Monday.

But Neelie Kroes, EU competition commissioner, claimed that this was “the only way to deliver stability and a level playing-field” – and a solid basis for future financial integration within the EU.
