December 3, 1999: The South African government finalises a R30bn arms deal involving the purchase of state-of-the-art ships, fighter aircraft and other weaponry from international companies. Jacob Zuma is deputy president. A long-time associate, Schabir Shaik, was central to some subsequent transactions – setting up local companies that helped one successful supplier.
June 2, 2005: After a long trial Mr Shaik was sentenced to a 15-year prison sentence for soliciting bribes and other payments for Mr Zuma
