Do not block treaty, Barroso warns Britain

Britain was warned yesterday it would harm its own interests if it blocked a deal this month on a revamped European Union constitution, and that the half-dead treaty would return to haunt Gordon Brown, the incoming prime minister.

José Manuel Barroso, European Commission president, said failure to get a deal would cost Europe credibility and distract attention from priority issues in London such as fighting climate change and securing a world trade deal.
