President admits error over support for son

Nicolas Sarkozy, French president, yesterday admitted he had made a mistake by supporting his 23-year-old son's bid to run the state agency overseeing France's richest business district.

"It was without a doubt an error," he told journalists in a barely disguised off the record briefing on Wednesday night, referring to the deep unease over what was widely criticised as nepotism.
