The United Nations’ nuclear watchdog said on Friday Iran had failed to answer important questions on its nuclear programme, in a move that strengthened the hand of western powers seeking tighter sanctions on Tehran.

In an unexpectedly critical report, the International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran had refused to give clear answers to queries on findings by western intelligence that indicate a possible military link to Iran’s nuclear programme.
