Berlusconi evokes Christ to kickstart campaign

Italy's general election campaign burst into life at the weekend with Silvio Berlusconi, prime minister, comparing himself to Jesus Christ and claiming that a new opinion poll showed his centre-right government ahead for the first time.

Romano Prodi, leader of the centre-left opposition, meanwhile told supporters that Italy's main challenge was to restore economic growth, which has been exceptionally weak during Mr Berlusconi's five years in power.
