Telefónica, the Spanish telecommunications group, on Wednesday defied the bleak trading outlook, announcing a 15 per cent increase in its dividend for this year.

The company, among the world’s largest telecoms operators, said it would pay out €1.15 a share, with the first tranche due in the second half of the year.
