The long-awaited break-up of the UK's biggest airport group began last night after BAA reached an agreement to sell Gatwick to the owners of London City airport for just over £1.5bn, according to people close to the matter.
Negotiators for the two sides worked late into the night on the deal, which was expected to be announced this morning before the markets opened.
