Israelis in rocket-hit communities and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are bracing for a surge in cross-border fighting as the six-month-old Egypt-brokered ceasefire between Israel and the Islamic group Hamas ended on Friday.

Israel has said in recent weeks that it would like to extend the shaky truce in and around the Gaza Strip, but Hamas – which controls the coastal enclave - announced on Thursday that the agreement will not be renewed.
