Long-term threat of EU pensions crisis ‘easing’

The threat of a pensions crisis blowing a hole in Europe’s public finances in the next 40 years appears to be easing in some countries, according to research to be presented to EU finance ministers on Monday night.

Joaquín Almunia, EU monetary affairs commissioner, will say that pensions reforms in some member states have reduced the economic risks posed by a rapidly ageing population, but that the reforms have been patchy.
