Inter-dealer brokers thrive in adverse times

For the G20 protesters thronging London’s streets this week, derivatives – the often complex financial instruments used to manage risk and speculate – have been easy targets.

American International Group, the US insurer, was laid low by the catastrophic misuse of certain credit default swaps, part of a much bigger family of credit derivative instruments.
