Och-Ziff’s shaky debut dents confidence

US stocks closed lower on Wednesday after some upbeat comments from Bear Stearns were offset by continuing weakness in retail stocks and as the technology sector bore the brunt of another late sell-off.

Shares in Merrill Lynch rose on reports the brokerage was about to appoint John Thain of NYSE Euronext as its new chief executive officer. Mr Thain confirmed the news after the closing bell.
