Funding blow for Olympic medal hopes

Britain’s medal hopes for the 2012 Olympics have been hit by the global financial crisis after the government said funding for elite sports would be £50m short of the total promised by Gordon Brown two years ago.

On Tuesday Andy Burnham, culture secretary, said an extra £29m ($43m) would be squeezed out of the Treasury – leaving a funding gap of £50m.
