Prudential withdraws from equity release market

Providers of equity release plans have reassured consumers that the market for lifetime mortgages remained strong, in spite of the sudden withdrawal of one of the leading providers.

In a move that surprised many in the industry, Prudential announced that it would stop selling lifetime mortgages – a type of equity release product – from the first quarter of 2010. The decision would not affect existing customers, said the Pru.
