Vote-rigging claims mar elections in Maldives

Voting opened in the tiny Indian Ocean nation of Maldives on Wednesday in the Islamic country’s first multi-party presidential elections.

They are the culmination of democratic reforms launched in 2004 after the autocratic government, led by President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, cracked down on mass pro-democracy demonstrations.
