US house sales 'in freefall' as lending conditions tighten

The number of Americans able to find prospective buyers for their homes fell to a record low in August in a sign that the global credit squeeze is worsening the downturn in the US housing market.

The National Association of Realtors said signed purchase agreements for existing homes dropped 6.5 per cent to the lowest level since record-keeping began in 2001. Compared with a year earlier, pending home sales were down 22 per cent.
